Belgium: 8 out of 10 leased vehicles are BEV

To continue the electrification journey Renta is asking both Belgian and European authorities for a stable legislative framework and incentives for the second hand market in order to accelerate and guarantee the uptake of EVs in a healthy business environment.

The call out was made at the 2024 Renta Happening on 7 November, attended by 300 members and guests of the Belgiam leasing and rental federation.

Renta Chairman Johan Portier (pictured), CEO of Ayvens in Belgium, underlined the urgency for authorities to take action as the ICE new sales ban on 2035 comes closer. He emphasizes the necessity of a mechanism to support the purchase of second-hand EVs by private individuals that allows the leasing industry to continue to play its forefront role in the greenification of transportation.

More than 80% is EV

The total Belgian leasing and rental fleet is estimated at around 650,000 vehicles, which is 9,4% of the total market of passenger cars and LCVs in Belgium (6,879,524 units).

Looking at this year’s numbers we see that 31% of new vehicle registrations in Belgium is leased/rented. Compared to last year the Belgian long term lease business grew with 2,5% from 528,637 to 541,975 units between 31 December 2023 and 30 June 30 2024. Impressive is that more than 80% of these new lease registrations are full electric. This shows that the vehicle leasing business makes a significant contribution to the greenification of the Belgian vehicle fleet the reduction of CO2 emissions.

The short term rental business on the other hand shrinked with 5,6% from 46,916 to 44,294 units, due to the decline in demand for temporary vehicles, now that the delivery times of passenger cars have normalised again, and the limited demand for electric rental cars.
